Recap & Review: When it comes to life, nothing that Hank does is planned or easy. That is what makes this series so good. It is messed up, and we get to see Hank deal with each and every problem that comes his way. This week, Hank finally decides to bite the bullet and propose to Karen. This is the next step to happily ever after. The two of them have decided to have a dinner party. Well, it looks like Karen has decided to have one, and Hank is being dragged into it and away from his Guitar Hero. In an impulsive moment, Hank gets down on one knee and proposes to Karen. His speech is real. It fits him and her. It wasn’t full of romance, but it was romantic in its own way. He wants to annoy the shit out of her for the rest of her life.
Once inside, the night begins. Mia is at the house, and Hank isn’t the only one wondering why she is there. I love the character, but I’m wondering how Mia still fits in things. She still has Hank’s book, but that can be handled quickly. The party begins. Becca has company. The boy she met at school shows up, and Charlie and his wife are out in the hall making out. Apparently the couple dropped some Ecstacy. What happened to these two this season? They used to be the serious ones! The next couple to arrive is Sonja and Julian. These are new arrivals this season. Sonja and the girls hang out in the kitchen, oohing and aahing over Karen’s ring while Mia throws out some rude comments. The guys hang out in the living room with Becca playing Guitar Hero. The last couple to arrive is Ashby and his date for the night, Destiny.
The dinner seems to be mass chaos as it starts with Becca thanks Satan for dinner. This opens up a debate on Satan where Becca stands up and speaks out on her beliefs. She shuts up the man speaking out against her and the whole table. However, Julian has a shocker for everyone. He says that Sonja is pregnant, but it isn’t his child. Julian will raise the child as his own, but we soon find out that Hank could be the father of the baby. Mia is the one that does the mental math. As Mia toasts, this is one fine mess.
A mess that only continues to grow as Hank finds people doing cocaine in Becca’s room. Ashby then appears to overdose, but not really. It is some kind of reaction that Hank fixes with a pen of medicine. He then takes Mia away from the party. Becca’s date is the next to leave. Once everyone leaves, Hank and Karen talk about his impending fatherhood. This might be the deal breaker to their happily ever after. His past once again has come back to bite Hank in the ass, and it will now be a part of his future. She gives him back his ring, and he leaves. Becca tells him it was nice while it lasted. Looks like Hank is back on the market.
This series is one with ups and downs. How many out there believed Hank and Karen would really find their happily ever after this time around? If they did, the show would have no real meaning. I think we need to say good-bye to Mia, even though she was the catalyst for a lot of the drama in this episode.Charlie is also making me wonder. Maybe with Hank going back to his ways, the others around him will settle down. What did you think of this week’s episode of Californication?
