Another Monday has arrived, so this means it is time to look at the weekend that was in movies. Last weekend’s number one, Funny People didn’t hold up this week with a slip down to fifth place and only $7.9 million in earnings. It is probably no shock here to see GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra hit the number one spot.  Even with all the bashing it has received in recent weeks, people still went out to see what the big deal was about.

Those that I have talked to that did see the movie said there was too much action and not enough plot or character development. This really doesn’t surprise me at all really. What kind of character development can you expect out of a movie based on a cartoon? Well, let’s think about that. Transformers seemed to manage to develop good characters and mix in the right amount of action. It seems to be a mix of the two really. A hit or miss formula, and in this instance it looks like a miss. We’ll have to see how GI Joe holds up against this weeks releases.

We have five movies coming to theaters this weekend including the next from Peter Jackson, District 9, and another entry from Eric Bana in The Time Traveler’s Wife, a love story from the novel of the same name. Disney also has a new entry with Ponyo. Who will come out on top? We will have to wait for next Monday to find out. As for what is hitting your store shelves this week, we have Zac Efron with 17 Again, the first season of 90210 and new music from Cobra Starship.
