Recap & Review: With this episode, season two of Californication comes to an end. The good news is the series is up for awards at the Golden Globes. Both the series and David Duchovny were honored with nominations. The bad news is we will probably have to wait close to a year for new episodes when season three hits. This week, we pick up with Hank finishing Ashby’s biography. He spends one last moment with his friend, and we discover that yes he did die at the end of last week’s episode. Hank goes to his grave with a 40 in hand to pay his respects, and he finds Mia there to do the same. She is heading off on a book tour to promote the book. It seems Hank has finally accepted that the book is now hers.
We next see Karen, and she has some great news. She has been offered her dream job, and she is taking it. However, the job will take her to NYC. Hank doesn’t mind the move, until he finds out he isn’t invited. She tells him he needs to handle the pending birth of his child, and she also tells him Becca has been heartbroken by her boyfriend kissing another girl. Hank goes to see the boy with the intentions of kicking a little ass, but they end up talking again. In the love department, things aren’t well for Charlie either. He has left Marcy for Daisy, and Daisy doesn’t seem to be too happy either. When she brings someone home she ends up sleeping with him. Not only does Charlie try to get Marcy back, but he has now sunk low on the job train. He has gone from agent to car salesman, and Marcy doesn’t want him.
Sophia does give birth in this episode, and once the baby is out we see it is impossible that Hank is the father. This baby is black, and everyone is relieved. Karen and Hank once again end up back in bed, and she changes her mind about him coming to New York with her and Becca. It seems like everyone is happy until Becca’s boyfriend apologizes, and those two end up back together. Karen doesn’t want to separate the two, so Hank offers to stay behind with Becca in LA while Karen goes to NY. He makes a great speech that Karen says makes her love him even more. She ends up going to New York alone, and we see a glimpse of what life with Becca and Hank will be like. These two should be able to keep each other in check. Hank has an opportunity to get laid, and he doesn’t even take it.
This season has had a lot of ups and down. Karen and Hank were on again and off again. Ashby threw some trouble into the mix, and I hated to see him die. Charlie’s life is a mess, and now with Hank and Becca on their own I am curious to see what will happen in season three. Have we seen the last of Karen? I hope not. These two really do belong together. I just hate having to wait so long to see what happens next. What do you think of this season finale and the season that was of Californication?
