Recap & Review: Only one episode of Californication left before this season is over for another year. Yes, fans of this series can breath easier knowing that this isn’t the end of the journey for Hank Moody. Showtime has renewed the series for a third series that will air next fall. Time will only tell what happens when the series returns. We know there are some changes happening next week. Spoilers suggest death and someone leaving. I think we might have seen the death on this episode, but we won’t get into that right now. Let’s talk about this week’s episode.
This week’s episode surrounded the release of Mia’s book. We know it isn’t her book, but it is now released, and the reviews are coming in. She shows up in Hank’s bedroom to tell him about the review of the book in the New York Times. They give it a great review. Ashby has ended things with Mia, but he still wants to throw her a party at his home for the release. This is where most of the action of the episode takes places this week.
Marcy does her best to avoid temptation, but with it being Ashby’s party, the alcohol and drugs are flowing. She seems to succeed. However, she gets some bad news during the party when Charlie outs his relationship with Daisy and asks Marcy for a divorce when Daisy takes another man to the party. Marcy doesn’t take this news too well. We don’t get to see much of that though because there is way too much going on. We do see a fight break out between them all before Hank uses Ashby’s shot gun method.
Becca is dealing with her first heartbreak as she goes to the party and catches her boyfriend kissing another man. Ashby takes lead on this one surprisingly before turning the teen over to Karen. Becca now knows men can’t be trusted. The Rolling Stone writer is also back, and she is making her own connections to the book. A connection that makes Hank the man Mia wrote about in the book. Hank and everyone else denies this though. Good thing Karen wasn’t in ear shot!
When everything dies down, Ashby’s one true love arrives at the party, and Hank talks her into seeing Ashby before she leaves. Hank goes to get the singer, and he is on his way down when something happens. He takes some drugs, and they appear to be bad. He collapses on the spot, and Hank isn’t able to revive him with his shot. Is Ashby dead?
There was a preview for next week that showed him alive, but we all know when it comes to shows and especially this one, this appearance could be in Hank’s mind. We’ll have to wait until next week to see what happens in the season finale. This series is ending on a strong note I think. Depending on what happens next week, we will have plenty to work with when season three rolls around next fall. What did you think of this week’s episode?
