Review: Californication Season 2 Premiere

TV.com: Slip Of The Tongue - Hank gets a vasectomy, and the reunited couple plan to return to New York.

Review: Last year, we saw David Duchovny return to Showtime in an all-new series, Californication. He had last appeared on Showtime as the man behind Red Shoe Diaries. Duchovny brought to life Hank Moody, an aging writer who had no problem with any woman he finds, even if he is still in love with his ex. Over the course of twelve episodes, we watch Hank deal with his ex marrying another man and trying to raise his daughter. By the end of the season, he gets his ex back, and we’re left waiting for what happens next. Now the wait is over.
This season opens with us seeing the happy couple together. They are having sex, but they have an issue with condoms. Hank decides to go in and have a vasectomy to avoid wearing condoms with Karen. The next decision the couple makes together is a move to New York. Their daughter doesn’t seem too keen on the move, but Hank and Karen want to move. In order to help ease the pain of the surgery, Hank grabs ice, and he picks the worst time. The real estate agent trying to sell his home shows up.
He then goes to the market, and bumps into a woman he once slept with. She offers him another round, but he has to decline for many reasons. Karen calls when he is there, and he goes to looking for their daughter. He finds her at her old home with her once step sister. Pete Wentz makes an appearance in this episode at this time. He talks to Mia, and she still has not come clean about the work of his she stole. It is being published as a memoir in her name. Next we see Hank and Karen out with their friends, and he meets up with yet another woman from his past.
Karen and Hank decide to have sex at the party, but there is a problem. Hank gets lost in the house, and he ends up going down on the wrong woman. The two leave the party arguing, and a cop pulls him over. Karen tells the cop he was drinking, and the situation goes from bad to worse. When the cop makes a comment about Karen, Hank hits the officer, and the officer hits back. We see Hank knocked out just as the credits start to roll. This happens to be one of my favorite series from last year. It is different and more provocative than most television on air currently, and Duchovny stands out in this series. This was a great way to start the new season. What did you think?
