Review: At the end of last season, we saw Dean go to hell, and I mean that literally. Thursday night September 18, we start a whole new season of Supernatural, its fourth. The series is set for five seasons, and tonight we see Dean return from hell in the opening seconds of the episode as he claws himself out of his grave. He finds a closed gas station, and he tries to make contact with Bobby. He calls first, but Bobby doesn’t believe it is him. Dean then shows up on Bobby’s doorstep. Bobby is still all too believing of him.
He thinks Dean is a shape shifter or demon. Dean has to prove otherwise. Once he does, Bobby tells Dean what has been happening. Sam appears to have gone off the deep end. He has brought Dean back from hell, or so they think. Dean goes about locating him, and he finds him near where Dean came back to life. They find him with a woman, and he made no deal with a demon to bring Dean back. This makes them wonder just who did.
Sam tells Dean and Bobby that he came to be in Illinois because he was following a group of demons while looking for Lilith. The demons came to that spot the same morning Dean came out of hell. The two brothers are together again, and not much has changed between them. We see them as they head to a psychic to find out how Dean was let out from hell. The psychic conjures the demon, and finds out its identity, but not at risking her own life. She goes blind trying to help.
Dean and Sam go to eat lunch, and while talking a demon comes to them. They sit and talk about the reasons why Dean was let out, but the demon doesn’t seem to have any more answers than Dean and Sam. She threatens him, but nothing comes of it. It appears Dean is protected. However, back at the hotel, the same force he saw at the gas station that first morning returns. The screeching noise that accompanies its appearance is enough to even get to me.
After this, Dean goes off with Bobby, while Sam returns to the diner to look for the demons he met with Dean at lunch. He is determined to find answers. However, the demons have been killed, except for one. Sam finishes off that one, and we see the return of Ruby, a new look for her as well this season. Ruby tells him this is no demon that brought Dean back.
Meanwhile, Dean and Bobby are doing their own ritual to find answers. They are successful and come face to face with something they have not found before. Dean was brought back from hell by an angel. God wanted Dean to live. There is work he must do. This comes out of nowhere, and I’m sure this sets up the story line for the next two seasons. This series has been a favorite of mine since the very beginning. I was curious just how they would bring Dean back, but they have managed to do it in a way that is believable and fits the series. I’m really excited to see what happens next for Supernatural.

Hi Gina great articles sorry for being an idiot yesterday..bleh you got my BOB vote 4evea
wow, sounds like a gripping show, i wish we got it here i will have to look out for it on cable
It was an awesome season opener! We’re thinking that the angel might be a fallen angel or a dark angel (of the Lucifer variety). Then again, they did have that episode last season (?) about faith, so this one could be a good angel too. He’s just a bit sinister looking. Not crazy about the new Ruby. The boys are looking good though!
Great review. Makes me feel like watching the series myself. I love this sort of series. Unfortunately for me, they dub every tv program to Hungarian. I lip read for sometime but ended up getting headaches so, no more watching series like this for me here. At least while I’m in Hungary. Boo hoo
I guess the “deal” whoever made was a one sided deal because why did they end up in a town in Illinois of all places? I can joke about it because i have lived around there.
Huge SuperNatural fan here, great review.
Oh criminy!
Supernatural’s back? So much for sleep
I love this show and watch every chance I get. It’s not on at the moment and so I am waiting anxiously for its return.
