Ugly Betty Star Speaks Out

cvr_17.jpg

America Ferrera graces the cover of Seventeen magazine this month, and she shares some of her views about some popular television, including 90210 and Gossip. Blake Lively, co-star to America in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, is one of the stars of Gossip Girl. America says that television series such as those condition us to be mean. She has remained good friends with her Sisterhood co-stars, and she counts Amber Tamblyn as one of her closest friends.

What do you think of what America says? Are these series giving the teens that watch them a bad idea? Will they take the things they see happen on the shows and include them in their own lives? In the past research has shown that television can increase violence in children. This is along the same lines. We have to hope people watching television and movies are intelligent enough to know it doesn’t have to transfer to their own reality. Television is meant for enjoyment, not as a model for life. Ugly Betty returns to ABC on September 25.
