Celebrity Today Movie Report For August 18

Published by Regina Avalos at 9:26 am under DVD, Movies, Music Edit This

The Dark Knight has finally toppled from its top spot at the box office to second place this past weekend. Estimates show that Robert Downey Jr.’s latest summer release, Tropic Thunder, has come out on top with aproximately $26 million in earnings. The Dark Knight had reigned supreme at the box office for over a month, and it is now the second highest grossest movie ever, as it passed Star Wars VI: A New Hope with its earnings this weekend. Another Star Wars feature also hit theaters this weekend as The Clone Wars, an animated feature from George Lucas, came in third place just behind The Dark Knight with approximately $15 million in earnings.Another new release this weekend, Mirrors, also did well for itself with about $11 million in earnings at the box office.

Tropic Thunder’s release was surrounded by trouble. Talk of a boycott and many wondering about Downey Jr.’s going black in this feature had many wondering if people would even go see the movie at all. They did though. Just enough to bring down Batman. A third Dark Knight is still up in the air as many fans debate just what villain Christopher Nolan will bring forward for another installment. Names thrown around at the moment include Angelina Jolie for Catwoman, Johnny Depp and a few others. I would love to see another installment here with Christian Bale. The Dark Knight was definitely better than Batman Begins, and I’d be interested to see who they would bring in for the third. The Dark Knight is still going strong. Even with its second place finish in the U.S., it topped the international box office again. Worldwide box office totals are around $800 million.

As for this week’s upcoming releases, Death Race is the big movie set to hit theaters this week, while on DVD we will see Prom Night and Street Kings hit store shelves. As for television series hitting DVD, the fall season’s pending return is showing many television series hit store shelves. Fans of Gossip Girl, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dexter can all pick up last season’s DVD box sets this week. As for new CD’s, last week was light, but this week is making it up for it with a number of new releases including music from the Goo Goo Dolls and Staind.
