Celebrity Today Movie Report For August 11

Published by Regina Avalos at 10:06 am under Celebrity News, Movies Edit This

Many thought this would be the weekend where The Dark Knight finally fell from the top spot, but even with two major releases last week, The Dark Knight came out on top once again with an approximate $26.2 million in box office earnings. Pineapple Express and The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 both had strong openings that started with Wednesday releases, but neither one of them could be beat The Joker and Batman. Pineapple Express came in second with $22.4 million in earnings, and The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 came in fourth place with $19.7 million.

Now this weekend, Tropic Thunder comes out on Wednesday, and this might be the movie that finally knocks The Dark Knight into second place. The movie is one of the most hyped of the summer, and it stars Robert Downey Jr., which after his turn in Iron Man in May makes him the man of the summer. The movie also stars Jack Black and Ben Stiller. Vicky Cristina Barcelona also is released this Friday in limited release. This next feature from Woody Allen stars Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson, and the buzz surrounding this one is all about the lesbian kiss the two women share.

As for DVD and CD releases, this week isn’t all that impressive. CD releases are a bit on the light side, but teens will be out in force to buy the new release by The Jonas Brothers. In television to DVD releases, fans of Tru Calling and South Park also have new releases to pick up at stores on Tuesday. The focus this week is on The Dark Knight and just how much the film will make domestically. It is at approximate $441 million right now, and that pushed it past Shrek 2 and just behind Star Wars IV: A New Hope on the best selling movies list. Titanic only did better. Estimates so far put The Dark Knight at $520 million here in the US, which would make it the second highest grossing film of all time. Can it push towards $600 and sink Titanic? Time well tell.
