Celebrity Today Movie Report For August 4
Brad and Angie’s babies have made their debut, and now it is the start of a new week. Box office estimates show The Dark Knight just barely edging out The Mummy release this week. If estimates hold, The Dark Knight will have topped the box office for the third weekend in a row. Estimates show that it earned $43.5 million this weekend, with The Mummy coming in just behind it with $42.5 million in earnings at the box office.
Sometime today the movie will cross the $400 million dollar mark in earnings. Right now, The Dark Knight is eight from the top of the best selling movies of all time, and if it continues at this rate, it will top $500. I don’t see much stopping this movie. It has Star Wars in its sights, and it might even end up topping Titanic before it is all said and done. I’m tempted to even see it again myself. Over on the DVD charts, 21 topped things in its first week of release.
Will The Dark Knight top the box office next weekend as well? That is yet to be seen. Four movies are set to come out in major release this week. One, The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2, heading into theaters a bit early with a Wednesday release. The Pineapple Express is a new comedy, and it might be able to knock The Dark Knight off from the top of the box office, but there really is no knowing until next weekend. Opening day numbers will be a good indication of how well the new movies will do against The Dark Knight.
This is a heavy week for DVD releases though. Mostly on the television to DVD front. A number of series are releasing on DVD this week including season one of Get Smart, season two of Star Trek, and the fourth season of Family Ties.
