The Joker Has The Last Laugh

A city in chaos. One man comes in looking to shine and save the city the right way. Another man comes in trying to save city in his, and a third comes in wanting to see everything burn.  The Dark Knight is probably one of the most highly anticipated movies of this summer. People have been selling out showing after showing, camping out and now their wait is over. I ventured to the theaters myself on Friday, and after some minor technical difficulties with the theater, the movie was on. You don’t want to make a packed full theater of fans angry. I even saw a few in full Joker make-up at my showing. I wasn’t the only one to head to theaters of Friday. The movie is said to have made $60 million in its first day of release.

This movie marks the return of Christian Bale’s Batman to the big screen. This time, he is going up against a mad man known only as The Joker. He has help of Jim Gordon, and a new man on scene, Harvey Dent. Dent is the new district attorney of Gotham and he is also Rachel Dawes’ love interest in this movie. If you haven’t see the movie yet, you might want to stop reading.

In this film, we see The Joker try to create chaos anyway he can. His one goal is to get the Bat to reveal his identity and turn himself in. That is what we think his main goal is. He really has no goal. His mind is that of a true psychotic. They have no desires or goals. They just want to create chaos. We see The Joker as he tries to work with the city Mafia as they deal with Batman. Harvey Dent comes in, and he is Gotham’s new shining star. With Batman’s help, he is able to clean up the streets of Gotham after arresting just one man. This man controls all the Mafia’s finances, and he has all the money. Once he turns evidence, over five hundred of Gotham’s criminals are put behind bars. Dent doesn’t have to hide behind a mask to do his work. Bruce Wayne looks to him to do what he cannot do. Save the city.

Dent’s arrests put the police force, the mayor and the district attorney’s office at risk. The Joker can and will kill anyone that gets in his way. This movie is full of little twists and turns. We are made to believe that Jim Gordon is killed by The Joker. We are shown what we think to be good cops, not be good cops in the end. Even something as small as Batman’s issue dealing with dogs is seen at the beginning of the movie, and then used again as a plot device towards the end of the film.  We see The Joker take Rachel and Harvey, and one does die.

Those that know the movie and comic book know that is not Harvey Dent. He does suffer burns to his face and we see the birth of Two Face. The Joker unleashes this mad man on Gotham, and he will do all he can to avenge the death of his girlfriend Rachel. However, in the end he dies, and his reputation as Gotham’s shining star is saved. Batman takes on the crimes of Two Face as his own. He will now be the hunted as Harvey is remembered for only the good he did in life. This movie shows just what can happen to a man that is pushed too far, and the one that pushed is The Joker.

Let’s take a moment to talk about The Joker and Heath Ledger. To me, he was the best part of this movie. He out shined Bale, and Eckhart in their roles.  The Joker in this movie was not like Jack Nicholson’s Joker in the original Batman movie. This Joker was insane. He was terrifying. I found myself cringing when he came on screen because I wasn’t sure what would happen when he hit the screen. Ledger immersed himself so completely in this role, and watching it play out on screen you have to wonder if this role is what drove him mad and resulted in his death. If he isn’t nominated for some kind of award for this work, I would be shocked.

The Dark Knight was wonderfully acted by all though. It was action packed and there was some great dialogue in this one. Special and visual effects made for a stunning film that I know was enjoyed by all in attendance. This one is definitely a movie you have to go see on the big screen or on IMAX. If you’ve gone to see The Dark Knight, tell me what you think? Did you enjoy it? Or not? Let’s talk!

I saw it this morning and LOVED!!! it! Heath Ledger portrayed the deepest, darkest, most accurate (IMO) interpretation of the Joker that’s ever been brought to film. He was magnificent. That beign said, Christian Bale is love :-) He’s by far my favorite Batman with Michael Keaton being a close second. What I like about Bale’s Batman is that he’s scrappier and some of Bruce Wayne’s sadness and angst comes through even when he’s wearing the mask. This movie did not disappoint me one bit. My only qualm is about seeing it in IMAX, which I did (at my husband’s insistence). It was a bit much on the senses and I should have learned my lesson from seeing the last Harry Potter in IMAX. I had a headache for the longest just from the last 20 minutes of that one.

Just came home from Dark Knight. Wow! What a film.

I agree - Heath Ledger did a much better job of Joker than Jack Nicholson. And I’m not saying that as a fan of Heath - I pay pretty much *zero* attention to celebs and quite honestly don’t have a clue if I’ve ever seen him in another movie or not. But as for this movie, he was fantastic. And oh so believable.

Oh but Christian Bale…*sigh* If I wasn’t married, I think I’d move to Hollywood and start stalking that man. LOL!!! Just kidding. But he is an absolute hottie. Definitely my favorite Batman.

Loved the movie. We are definitely buying it on DVD when it comes out!
