Celebrity Today Movie Report For July 14

Published by Regina Avalos at 9:26 am under DVD, Movies Edit This

the_dark_knight_outro_poster.jpgAnother weekend is wrapped up, and that means we’re ready for my Monday morning look at the movies. This weekend at the box office was just a bit on the quiet side. No movie released broke $50 million. Hancock slid down into second place as suspected, and Hellboy II: The Golden Army topped the box office by earning just under $36 million. The other film released this weekend, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D came in third with $20.6 million. Meet Dave, the latest from the mind of Eddie Murphy, crashed hard with just a bit over $5 million made at the box office.

As for DVD sales, Vantage Point somehow managed to come out on top against its competition the first week of its release. It topped the both the standard and Blu-Ray sales charts and the rental charts for the week ending July 6. That film took in $72 million at the box office in its theatrical release. This week on DVD you have several movies to pick from including Step Up 2, The Bank Job and Penelope.

Looking ahead to this week’s releases, we have the movie everyone has been waiting for - The Dark Knight. This one has been so hyped the last few months, and now the wait is almost over. Michael Caine is saying that Heath Ledger might just receive an Oscar nomination for his role of The Joker in this movie. There are Thursday night showings, and some theaters are even showing the film in the early morning hours Friday to meet the demands of movie goers.

I almost feel horribly sorry for Mamma Mia! being released against the power of the Batman. There is no way this movie will do well against The Dark Knight. This reminds me of a similar super hero movie released back in 2007. Spiderman 3 was released with Lucky You. Spiderman 3 slaughtered Lucky You at the box office, and that movie met a quick DVD release by September. Will the same happen here with Mamma Mia!? We will have to wait and see. I just know everyone I’ve talked to is planning to see The Dark Knight immediately upon its release.

I want to see Space Chimps and Hellboy 2. I also see that you listed Swamp Thing the Series. I enjoyed that show. Maybe I will need to get that one. Thanks for the list.
