Celebrity Today Movie Report For July 7

Published by Regina Avalos at 8:45 am under DVD, Movies, Television Edit This

fastlane_complete.jpgThe fourth of July holiday weekend here in the United States is now over, and this means it is time to tally up the totals and find out just how well Will Smith did in his return to the 4th. He hadn’t premiered a movie on this weekend since 2002’s release of Men in Black II. Did he reclaim his title of Mr. 4th of July? All arrows are pointing to yes. Over the five and a half day period since its release, Hancock did manage to earn over $100 million at the box office. It’s weekend total came up to approximately $66 million.

Not bad numbers at all for a movie that has been getting some mixed reviews. I’ve talked to both people that loved  the movie or hated it. The real way to tell how good this movie is will be by next week’s numbers. If it remains on top of the box office battle when it goes up against Hellboy II and Journey to the Center Of The Earth being released this weekend, it might just be an okay movie after all. I still might wait for its release on DVD though.

As for DVD releases, 10,000 BC came out on top on all three DVD charts for its first week of release. This movie came out in theaters in March, and it looked like one of those big epic movies. It just didn’t do well on the big screen, but it looks like DVD sales and rentals just might have saved it. As for those films hitting DVD this week, we have horror flick The Ruins coming out on DVD with Stop-Loss and Superhero Movie.

On the television front, the complete series of Fastlane is finally hitting DVD. This one took six years following its cancellation on Fox. The reason for it being canceled - it cost way too much to make. It was one of my favorite series though. It brought the big screen feel to the small screen, and not many series do that even today. Fans of Psych, Soul Food and Monk can also pick up new seasons of those series on DVD this Tuesday. Check out the full list of this week’s releases including a re-release by Maroon 5 on CD after the jump.

I’m still debating on if I want to go and see Hancock. I passed up on seeing 10,000 BC so I’ll def be renting that soon.

I’ll be buying the second season of Psych. Great show! Not sure about The Ruins yet, I’m on the fence.
