A Look At - 2008 So Far

Published by Regina Avalos at 8:22 am under A Look at, Movies, Television Edit This

aoloughlin_season1_010.jpgI was inspired yesterday by The Movie Blog’s list of the best and worst movies of 2008 so far. It gave me an idea for a new series, but I’ll talk about that in a minute. I’m sure we all have our favorites. I’ve seen a handful of this year’s releases so far, and I plan to head out to see a few more. Personally, my favorite so far this year is Sex & The City: The Movie. It had all of the punch the television series had, and it kept true to the women that made us fall in love ten years ago. I would actually like to see another movie come from this television series, and there are rumors that it might just happen.

Another movie I just watched recently is 21. This one starred Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess, and it followed a team from MIT that end up being gamblers in Vegas. They eventually are caught, but it becomes one wild ride before they do. Some really didn’t like this movie, but I found myself enjoying it. Perhaps I like gambling movies a bit much, but this one fit in nicely for me for a night.

There is no way I can mention some of the releases of this year without mentioning The Incredible Hulk. That one was the biggest release of the early summer, but it looks like it might already be out shined by Wanted and now Hancock. Word of mouth seems to be mixed for Will Smith’s latest 4th of July movie, but the numbers will tell the story once they are released. We’ll have to keep an eye on this week’s totals, and then see if the movie can live up to them next weekend.

On television, 2008 was a mixed bag year. The writer’s strike hit things hard, and television was put on a lock down. There were some new television shows that stood out during the 2007-2008 television season though. Two that immediately come to mind are Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Moonlight. Terminator came in as a mid-season replacement back in January, and it was explosive, literally and figuratively. It did quite well for the network, and it was immediately picked up for season two.

Moonlight, over on CBS, didn’t do as well. It has been canceled by the network, but this one I wish had been saved. It had a different look at vampires than we are used to seeing on television. Alex O’Loughlin did quite well as Mick St. John, and he had a good cast around him. The fans have continued to fight for it to be brought back, but I think it might be a lost cause. None of the other networks have shown any interest at all.

In the weeks ahead, I want to take look at the years releases on the big and small screen. Talk about the hits and some of the misses. Some years might be skipped or combined. I’m thinking we’ll go as far back as 1975 at least, and this will be a Sunday occurrence. When it is all said and done, I will come back and take a look at 2008 all over again because by then we’ll have some more releases to talk about. For now, buckle yourself in! We are going back in time. Back to the future moment now over. Chime in with your favorites so far this year, and take a moment to vote in our poll. Have a great day everyone.

I agree with you on Hulk. I actually liked the first one. I think it had more heart than this one did. TV hasn’t really bounced back, and if the actors go on strike it might hit hard too. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen.

I loved Sex & The City: The Movie, but I wish they had going less on fashion and more on storyline. I would have loved to have known how Stanford and Anthony got together!
