Beverly Hills Cop To Return? Please, no!

Published by Regina Avalos at 9:28 am under Movies Edit This

batmangotmilk.jpgYes, someone else has decided it is time to revive another old movie franchise and make a new movie in it. This weekend, we had Indiana Jones 4. In the past week, the latest Rambo was released on DVD. There are talks about Spiderman 4 and 5. Although if that happens, we might have someone new playing Spidey. We have a new Incredible Hulk movie out in a few weeks, and how many times have we seen Batman come to the big screen? Forget that for a moment! How many actors have we seen play Batman? Can we say George Clooney’s bat nipples anyone? By the way, Clooney is now single, ladies! Meanwhile, Bale is out with a new Got Milk campaign to promote the release of the Dark Knight. I’m sure there is many more instances of this, but these are off the top of my head. If you can think of more throw them out to me in comments.

It is happening again though. Eddie Murphy wants to bring Beverly Hills Cop back to the big screen. This would be the fourth installment. Beverly Hills Cop 3 was released back in 1994. Now, I’ll be the first to admit, Eddie Murphy is a comic genius. I’ve enjoyed a number of his movies over the years, but he just isn’t doing what he used to. Maybe he has run out of ideas. Why would he want to even do this? Even though I do have to say I enjoyed one return to the big screen when I finally saw Rocky Balboa, the latest to be released in that series, but I’m shaking my head at the rumors of Stallone wanting to move forward with a seventh. That might be pushing it.

Just like reviving Beverly Hills Cop after fifteen years might be really pushing it. Filming will start next year though, and the film will be released in 2010. Brett Ratner is set to direct. Ratner’s name has actually been mentioned today connected to another possible project, God of War. This is a video game, and he might be set to bring it to the big screen. This is according to Cinematical. Ratner is one busy man it seems!

Funny thing is that all Hollywood does these days is recycle and re-visit old ideas so I am NOT surprised. Sad and not looking forward to it? Yes. Surprised. Nope.

You have to wonder if the studios have lost their edge. Or perhaps they have no faith in writers delivering something that’s going to make millions. Instead they are just rehashing the tried, tested and sometimes tired whilst the Inde movie market is going from strength to strength. As a writer I can’t believe it’s a lack of good stories, more a lack of faith and a fear of losing money that’s stopping new classics from being made.

I remember enjoying the first Beverly Hills Cop, but too much isn’t a good thing. The new Batman revamped the whole concept and took a different direction. I can’t see that happening with Beverly Hills Cop.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve liked anything Eddie Murphy has done. I think I’m going to pass on this one.
