Avatar has been at the top of the box office charts for the last six weeks, and now it has managed to knock Titanic from the top of the charts as far as earners go. James Cameron released Titanic in 1997, and it has topped the list of highest grossing movies of all time ever since. Monday afternoon it went down below the icy waters it had been floating on as it sunk to the number two spot beat off by the next James Cameron epic creation, Avatar. Worldwide the film has made 1.292 billion dollars! That is a lot of money!
Here we are, the first true weekend of the new year, and things are finally getting back to normal. There is no real surprise that Avatar is still on top of the box office game. The movie looks unstoppable by this point, and the only movie to ever make more world wide is also by James Cameron with his Titanic. Avatar came out on top this week with $48.5 million in earnings. The new releases this week didn’t even make it to the top three. Daybreakers managed to come fourth place with $15 million at the box office. Leap Year and Youth In Revolt came in just a bit lower than that.
As for new releases this week, we have The Lovely Bones going in wide release and The Book of Eli hitting theaters. The end of time seems to be a popular theme on television and movies this month. As far as the new releases coming to store shelves, you have Fame, Halloween II and Post Grad coming out on DVD, and new music from Vampire Weekend and Lady Gaga. Avatar is still doing strongly at the box office. For the first official weekend of the year, it managed to top things again with another $68 million in ticket sales. Worldwide the movie has already managed to top $1 billion at the box office. We’re starting to get back into gear a bit now that the holidays are over with four new releases hitting theaters this weekend. Things are still a little slow on store shelves, but that should pick up soon enough. Check out a full list of this week’s new releases below.
Both the first trailer and poster for the new Robin Hood movie have hit the net in the last week. This one stars Russell Crowe in the infamous role that Christian Bale was first looked at for. A couple of times already this month, I have hit you with the latest from Sex & The City 2. First with a set of movie stills from location, then the first poster, and now we have the first trailer. This one doesn’t tell us a lot about the movie other than the girls are headed out of the country. Check out the trailer below. Sex & The City 2 hits theaters on May 28th, 2010.
Here we are! The final movie report of the year, and it will be a short one because there isn’t much new coming out this final week of the year. At the box office, Avatar managed to beat out the new arrivals at the box office, Sherlock Holmes and the Alvin & The Chipmunks sequel, by taking in another $75 million at the box office. Holmes came in second place with $65 million in its first week of release. No new movies set to hit theaters this Friday, so we will have to wait and see what happens next Monday with the new 2010 movie report. Avatar is already on its way to $1 billion world wide though with $617 million earned in its first week. Check out the list of few releases we do have this week below.

Another remakes. Yes, another classic movie from the 1980s is being remade and redone and is set for release this summer on June 11th. This one stars the son of Will Smith, Jaden Smith, along with Jackie Chan. In this one, the boy moves to China and after a bully bothers him he learns Kung Fu from Mr. Han.
The trailer for this one has just hit the Internet, and as a fan of the original trilogy and even the movie made with Hilary Swank. I’m curious to see how this one will end up doing. Cameron Diaz seems to be one busy lady these days. We just had the first trailer for her next adventure in animation released not too long ago, and now we have the trailer for her next movie with Tom Cruise out.
The movie has been filming for the last few months in Boston and Spain, and shooting just wrapped up last week. A trailer was rushed out to air before Avatar on its release weekend, and now trailer has made its way onto the internet.
The movie is an action-comedy with a release date set for the 4th of July weekend. Check out the trailer for the movie below. This one woman seriously had some bad luck!
With only one major movie in release this past weekend, it is that movie that managed to top the box office. James Cameron’s Avatar was finally released, and it was able to bring in $73 million in its first weekend with $27 million of that coming in just on the first day of its release.
Things might be slowing down as far as retail releases til after the end of the year, but we have a number of new movie releases. Alvin & The Chipmunks return with the Chippettes and their sequel, and we also have Sherlock Holmes and the expansion of Nine to a more wider release after a limited release this weekend.
